If you’re from Hawaii, Cyrus Belt is a name you are all too familiar with. Unfortunately, Cyrus Belt was thrown from a bridge onto the freeway by one of this neighbours.  Cyrus was just 1 1/2 years old.

The suspect is Matthew Higa, 23, of Makiki, Oahu. Neighbours and former neighbours all say he was quiet and problematic. Him and his father always fought and attracted the authorities.

The mother of the victim,  Nancy Asiata Chanco, said that she knew the neighbour but would never trust him with her baby. Speculations have been made that she left Cyrus with Higa and that they were friends. Chanco says that couldn’t be further from the truth and that Higa was “weird and always wanting to play with the baby”. Something she says she wouldn’t let him do.

A makeshift memorial has been made on the pedestrian bridge that Cyrus Belt was thrown from and continues to double each day. Authorities say that it has gotten so big that they will have to take it down and move it elsewhere in order to prevent any future accidents.

Cyrus Nainoa Tupa’i Belt’s funeral will be this Thursday, Jan. 24 at the Nuuanu Memorial Park at 2233 Nuuanu Ave. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. and the service begins at 6 p.m. at the West Chapel in the park. The burial will be private.

A candlelight vigil for slain toddler Cyrus Belt and Kailua murder victim Janel Tupuola is at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the state Capitol. They ask everyone in the state of Hawaii to light a candle in remembrance of the victims.
